Thriller genre

One of the earliest 'thrillers' was Harold Lloyd's comic Safety Last (1923), with the all-American boy performing a stunt on the side of a skyscraper. From this point onwards films such as Pulp Fiction (1994) by director Quentin Tarintino this film is rated as one of the best thrillers today. Also the film inception directed and written by Christopher Nolan is known as one of the best films in the thriller genre.

A thriller is a villain-driven plot, where the protagonist is given obstacles/situations that they have to overcome. For a thriller movie to be sucessfull it has to keep the audience on their seat. Some of the following are sub-genres under the thriller genre, conspiracy, crime, erotic, political ,psychological, spy, supernatural and techno. One of the main reasons thrillers are popular are because , they have the audience on the edge by the sense of mystery and the audience will carry on watching to see what happens next.

Another common subgenre of thriller is the spy genre which deals with fictional espionage. Successful examples of thrillers are those of Alfred Hitchcock. The action and horror genres also overlap with the horror and action genres as they have the same conventions as each other.

Because the thriller genre is such a big genre it has give the opportunity for sub-genres such as psychological thrillers, mystery thrillers, crime thrillers, relationship thrillers and conspiracy thrillers.
